Silly Songs

My heart did silly things when it first saw you,
It kicked and screamed and tumbled through the flowers,
It fell backwards in the grass
And looked at the unending sky above.
It gathered all of Heaven's stars
And strung them up on silver 'round my neck
Like lights twinkling for some famous actress,
It lined up arrows around itself.
My heart did jumping jacks when your name came up,
And when it heard your voice it drummed inside my chest
A song that you could hear for miles and across the continents.
It did all kinds of silly things
Like ache to keep you near,
Like pull at the inside of my ribs
Just for a chance to touch your fingertips.
It ordered for kisses and hugs,
Commanded the gentlest touches of your silky skin...
It did the goofiest things
Like play me dreams of you each and every night.

My heart has changed its mind and it no longer kicks,
No longer screams, has stopped tearing at my seams
For the chance to come kneel at your feet.
My heart has settled at the base of my neck,
And drums a steady song without fear or regret,
It settles against my ribs, closest to you
And aches for just once chance to hold you close.
It still does the silly things it used to do,
But now the fear is gone...
It knows it found what it had searched for,
It found our home between your arms.
I kept the stars around my neck,
I kept the field of flowers...
But now the heart no longer drums
Its silly schizophrenic songs...
It drums the most darling melodies
Of us and all our sons.
